The book within a book is an interesting and intriguing concept but didn’t work so much for me here. Recently, I’ve been more interested in “modern” mysteries vs closed door/ Agatha Christie style mysteries. The book within this one follows the latter so I had to push through that part of the book a bit. I enjoy Horowitz’s writing and it was a well crafted book, I just did not enjoy it as much as his other books that I have read.
I enjoyed the main storyline better and putting the puzzle pieces together.
I think this will work for you if you are in the mood for both a closed door/Agatha Christie style murder mystery and a more modern “go new places and meet new characters as you go” type mystery.

A mystery in a mystery is a true page turner. I found it interesting the different writing styles but definitely had to skip the poor writing quality one. I found myself skimming to get to the end and like all mysteries the hits keep coming in the end when just more drama on top of drama seems to unfold. But I do like how various little town gossip feels so important for one person but not connected to the actual murder but their anxiety about it being uncovered makes them a suspect. Interested in the series, maybe? I'm unsure how the main character goes on more crime solving when the most interesting part was the author and his puzzles.

Editor Susan Ryeland receives the latest Atticus Pund "whodunit" to review on a Friday and by the end of the weekend, the manuscript's author is dead. A homage to Agatha Christie stories, this is a cleverly written mystery within a mystery, one the traditional Atticus Pund solving crimes in sleepy English villages and one about the author himself and his own untimely demise.
I liked it well enough to try another book by Anthony Horowitz. I’m a huge fan of Midsomer Murders ❤️
A little long but overall a good story with lots of twists
Life is too short to bother finishing this confused and confusing book that gave me a headache. Pass.
