I don't feel able to give this book a rating. There were things I loved, most notably the whip smart banter that reminded me of screwball comedies of the 1930s, the irrepressible heroine's clever schemes to manipulate everyone's lives (I've seen her compared to both Mary Poppins and Flora Poste), and the hilarious madcap ending complete with ducklings ("Don't tread on the ducklings!")
But - and it's a big but - the scene with the Jewish moneylender is anti-Semitic. The digital edition I read (Penguin Random House UK, 2011) doesn’t include some of the more egregious stereotypical descriptions, but it was still incredibly difficult to read.
Also, the hero is her first cousin, which squicked me out.

A fun daring heroine in a regency setting. As a Romantic period nerd, I enjoyed all the detail that went into it and the story was overall very compelling. I liked the chemistry between the protagonist and her love interest (yes you have to forego the fact that they’re cousins). Don’t see why they had to be cousins since this book was written in the 20th century. Needless anti-semitism also leaves a bad taste in your mouth considering it was written in 1950! But overall, really enjoyed how the plot progressed and how the final act of the book took place. A well-written, entertaining tribute to Austen indeed.

Very fun, slightly ridiculous. A strong female lead who endlessly meddles (with more success than Emma) in the lives of all of those around her. Some racist references to Jews around the middle of the book but these are brief, although pointed.

Never ever a disappointment, Georgette Heyer can be relied on at every turn for entertaining, uplifting, funny and excellent books. A firm FIRM favourite, a perfect mixture of romance, wit and absurdity this book couldn’t be asked for more! PS plenty of hessian boots and devilish good regency bits and bobs lol

Looking past some very rough outdated stereotypes (especially the racism and antisemitism), I enjoyed this book far more than I thought I would. Love a cunning escapade that works out with everything fitting together in the end.

This is a delight right up until the very blatantly antisemitic scene about 2/3 of the way through that really sours the whole thing.
