A story with a powerful heroine is always a delight and this hasn't disappointed. Something in it makes us spellbound to the core; there is nothing more to say. Though labelled as a romance, any indication of love is shown only at the very end, to give it some perfection it seems. That's good, because much of the pleasure is derived from Sophy's grand actions and clever repartee with Charles. There is nothing lacking in her, and no one could be this much proficient in both feminine and masculine arts. No wonder, her military friends nicknamed her as Grand Sophy. A must read work for anyone interested in a little fun.

This books was a fucking ride. The four stars are not for the romance for it didn't exist, but for making me laught at all those ridiculous people and events. God I have never read anything like this, it was just like looking at dramas unfolding one after another, I was a mere audience, I couldn't bring myself to leave my seat and couldn't help myself ridiculing everyone.

It was very good once I was able to get into it. I didn't realize it was an abridged version until just before I finished it. I think I might have been able to give it a 5-star if it was the whole book. It didn't flow quite right and I felt that it was missing some parts. It came across as a cross between "Hello Dolly" and Pride and Prejudice". I will definitely be reading more of her works.

delightful lighthearted fun. our titular sophy is basically a mary sue that exudes total main character/not like other girls energy - capable, strong spirited, playful, witty, brash - and i didn't mind this in the slightest and was utterly charmed. couldn't get enough of her masterful hijinks. georgette heyer writes fantastic engaging dialogue. sophy and her father's casual and frivolous attitude towards the numerous situations that other characters are completely appalled by was comedic gold.
the scene of sophy squaring off against a certain unsavory debt collector officially cements her on my mount rushmore of kickass heroines - with her dropping lines like:
'you know', said sophy, frowning slightly, 'i cannot help thinking that it might be a very good thing if i were to shoot you in any event. i did not mean to when i first came because naturally i cannot approve of murder, but i see that you are a very evil man, and i cannot help wondering if a really courageous person would not shoot now, and so rid the world of someone who has done a great deal of harm in it'
i mean come on!!
loved seeing her spar with charles and stick it to his fiancee. the secondary cast of characters ranged from the ridiculous to the lovable and all were entertaining. did wish there was a smidge more explicitly romantic moments but was still overall satisfied by the ending. reading this was just an all around grand time. excited to dive into this author's backlist

Except for a gratuitously vicious bit of anti-Semitism in the middle of this book that could just as well have been left out, it's one of Heyer's best, balanced between strong characters and a smacking good pace. There are some genuinely funny bits, and the whole is so cinematic that it surprises me this hasn't been optioned by the BBC. Though if they do, I hope they skip that disgusting middle chapter, or take the FAIL out of it.
