A true story! The pictures caught my attention. Brilliant colors, excellent illustrations! The story is written in rhyme.

Joao rescued the oil-soaked penguin named Dindim. We learned what Joao had do to help the penguin get back in the water.

Perfect for young readers!

Joao finds a penguin, whom he names Dindim, and decides to befriend him in this super cute tale.

This book is adorable! I love little stories about friendship! It's important to be nice and friendly with one another, and especially help those in need! This story focuses on that trait and does a great job of it. Joao takes care of his little penguin friends and gets him back on his feet.

To add to this amazing story, it's also real! Joao lives in Rio de Janeiro and actually helped nurse a penguin back to health. There is also information on how wildlife is being affected by some of our toxic human activities, so you can add some educational material to this book or just read it as a cute story.

I really like this book and I think it is excellent. I'd highly recommend it to young readers looking for a pretty book with a great story! Especially if they love animals and penguins!

The art style is soft, full of colour and unique. It makes this story super adorable and easy to follow, and will hook you to the page.

Four out of five stars.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kids Can Press for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

A charming story of friendship despite time and distance.

The true story aspect of this story, along with the back matter, makes this story really shine. It would be particularly helpful for children as they experience the different seasons of friendship. The illustrations bring the setting to life, and hint at a friendship beyond what we learn about in the text. While the rhyming doesn't necessarily add to the prose, it doesn't particularly detract.

Overall, a lovely picture book with a strong theme of true friendship.

A story of friendship: an old man comes across an oil-slicked penguin on the beach & helps him to get healthy & safe again. This cute little illustrated book is based on a true story (which I'm currently reading). Friendship, penguins and a hint of environmentalism I LOVE IT. The illustrations were beautiful & made me wish I was on a beach somewhere - with a penguin friend! Adorable!

Cover: 5/5 - penguins + beach + old man = happiness
Audience: Children, young readers
Penguins, beach, friendship, cute, nature
Overall 4.5/5 would recommend, adorable!

I requested and received an e-ARC of this book from NetGalley and Kids Can Press in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was a cute re-telling of the true story of João, the penguin he rescued from an oil spill and the friendship that blossomed. The illustrations are sweet, and the rhyming makes it fun to read.

I appreciated the authors note at the end of the book explaining oil spills and the effects on the afflicted wildlife.

I enjoyed the actual picture book very much. The pictures and the rhyming verse were well done, and tell the story well to the intended audience.
I do think the author's note is initially repetitive, but goes on to convey additional interesting information.
