So last night I finished The Whisper Man by Alex North and spoiler I very much enjoyed it. I read it on recommendation from my friend @heyatlascreative and texted them throughout the entire thing with my reactions. I won’t say it was full of twists and turns that kept me guessing because I did guess the killer at about page 80, but there were other things that managed to keep me engaged even though I did know that ending. I really liked the book, the idea of a man whispering outside your window is disgusting and terrifying, but is also a great premise for a book. I ended up taking a star away because there were some things that seemed a little contrived and were only there for the aesthetic. Yes I am talking about the butterflies. I also hated the wishy washy approach towards death the author took towards the end of the book. If your going to kill a character do not give them a ghostly extra credit seem if you want stakes to mean anything. Overall I thought the writing style was engaging and I look forward to see what Alex North writes in the future.

The Whisper Man is an extremely dark story that follows the victims of an infamous serial k!ller.

Tom and his young son, Jake, just moved into a new house in a new town after the death of Tom's wife. The house is a little creepy, but they're hoping it will offer them a fresh start. What the pair did not realize is that their new town has a dark past. Twenty years ago, Frank Carter, nicknamed "the Whisper Man" for his creepy tactics to lure his victims, was arrested for abducting and murdering five people. Right as Tom and Jake are getting settled, a young boy vanishes, and the case is eerily similar to the ones twenty years ago. To make matters worse, Jake starts to hear whispering at his window.

There were parts where the plot dragged a bit and others where more tension and suspense would've been helpful, but overall, I thought the author told the story quite well. I was invested in the main characters and their connection to each other as well as their connection to the town and its dark history.

4.5 stars!!

It's been a long time since a book has kept me reading through the night until the sun came up, but this book has done just that.

It's a great story about the realities of the father-son relationships. It's also a mystery where a serial killer kidnaps little boys by whispering at their window at night. It has drama of course (happy people have no stories) with a healthy dose of eerie/supernatural as Jake, the MC's son, seems to have a gift for seeing children who aren't there. The prose is pretty and tight and it switches between 1st person and 3rd person (but it totally works), and the story jumps from one character to the other, circling back often, so that it can be delivered from the point of view with the most impact. Would definitely recommend this book!!

WARNING: If you are hypersensitive with an overactive imagination like me, there are some parts that might bother you as this IS a book about the murder of children (even though there are no detailed description pertaining to any of the murders) so I suggest you have something fun and light lined up for when you're done reading THE WHISPER MAN. ^_^

I finished reading Whisper Man and I now know why it got all hyped up. Alex North's writing was great, he built a tense and creepy atmosphere right from the start. The first few chapters really creeped me out I had to put my bedside light on when I slept! I love how each chapter was told from a different POV and we get to see the story from different angles. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
As I got further along the book, the creepiness started to falter since now the focus seems to be on the crime solving and the whodunit side of the story. This book was a mix of supernatural, crime and family relationships (good and bad) and I thought it all blended well. The end of the book was puzzling to me, so I actually had to google the meaning of it. What's interesting is I found out that the US and UK editions end in a different way. All the characters had the same endings, but from different perspectives.

All in all, it was a terrific suspense/thriller book, and I rate it 5 stars!
