I was not in the mood to read this which is heavily influencing my rating. I'll eventually do a reread of the series to give it a second chance because I remember really liking the first two books. I just felt like I was reading a different series with this one.

As much as it bums me out to rate this 2.75 stars, this final book in the The Veiled Kingdom series fell flat and didn't deliver.
Like many others have said in their reviews, there was an introduction of an entire history and backstory that could have been introduced throughout the other books. I also struggled with the pace of the book, and the very disappointing, anticlimactic ending. For almost 500 pages, I don't know that there was much substance.
I loved book 1, and felt meh about book 2, but thought I'd give it a try. I truly struggled to finish this book.
The dialogue between Dacre and Verena felt a little forced and too flowery, and at times a little cringey.
Really bummed this book didn't redeem the series for me.

I had to drag myself to the finish line for this and I’m quite sad about it.
I was very excited for the finale to this trilogy because I absolutely loved book 1, Veiled Kingdom, and while I thought book 2, Hunted Heir, was too short with nothing really relevant happening, I still enjoyed it.
Rivaled Crown, however, started out pretty strong. It immediately locked in my attention and I practically devoured the first 25% and then…it just dragged on and on and onnnnnn….
And to be honest, it was quite cringe.
Seriously, I was cringing most of the time that Dacre and Verena are talking to each other because it’s literally consistently extremely POETIC.
I swear no couple speaks like this ALL THE TIME, not even in fantasy books.
They rarely had any normal conversation. Every time they talk to each other, it’s like someone shoved down a poetry book down both their throats.
The ending was pretty anticlimactic. It’s weird that Dacre’s dad was redeemed when he’s basically President Coin from Hunger Games. It was weird.
I just really truly enjoyed the first quarter hence the 3 stars.
Oh and plus the spicy scenes are actually good. At least when they’re going to poundtown, they talk like normal people.
