I think my expectations for this book was higher than what it offered. I really enjoyed the writing of the author and the plot was interesting but I just felt like I couldn’t relate to the characters or even feel bad when something would happen. There was a lot of information that could’ve been cut because it felt like it dragged on at points. I wanted to like the love story more but I just felt like it was more of a “situation we’ve known each other for so long and even tho I wasn’t as close with you as with our other friend i’ll like you” type love story. It felt forced cause they would argue a lot about silly things so it actually made me wonder why they even paired them in the first place. Anyways, overall I actually like that the ending was left open ended and the story itself was a cool concept.

I so badly wanted to like this book. But I just really thought it was mediocre.

I wasn't compelled by the characters or their relationships. Reese and Hetty could've had an awesome romance that was challenged by their circumstances but instead we got a shallow, barely fleshed out relationship that seemed more of a side piece for LGBT rep than anything.

It took absolute ages to get the story off the ground and once it finally did it dragged on so long that I started reading faster just to be finished with it. I think the idea of the Tox is so incredibly cool but we got nearly no answers until the absolute end, which just felt cheap and boring.

And then at the end we don't even get a satisfying conclusion. I get that some people like the whole cliffhanger thing, where we don't know if they'll be okay or not. But if you're gonna give me a whole book essentially hyping up their escape from their terrible circumstances, give me that satisfying escape!

Everyone who recommended this book described it as horror, but to me it wasn't. It was a slow story that dragged on, with a few bloody scenes plopped in, and had essentially no emotional payout.

Again, I really wanted to enjoy this one. I just couldn't.
