The story is told in two timelines - one during the war and one in 2015. When it switched to the present I was super taken out of it because I was so immersed with Eliane and her story.
That said I wasn’t expecting
I enjoyed the writing and the story and I’ll definitely check out the author’s other books.

an unhappy ending and I’m sorta bummed about the fates of most of the characters. I get it, it’s war time but I thought it would end up with a happy ending as one happy family. But boy was I wrong :(I enjoyed the writing and the story and I’ll definitely check out the author’s other books.
I could not put this down!! A brilliant historical fiction that will take you back in time and leave you itching for more. I simple enjoyed the flow and characters of this and fell in love.
This is a book I normally wouldn't have grabbed, but my options were limited in the tiny airport shop between flights. I definitely was NOT disappointed! I loved the switching back and forth between wartime and present time, as well as the parallels drawn between some of the characters during each time. Elaine and Remy's stories were super easy to get lost in. The small victories and utter heartbreaks had me totally sucked in and emotional for them. I couldn't put this one down for long.

The modern day storyline was entirely uninteresting, but I enjoyed reading about Eliane’s work in the Louvre during the war.
This book is so, so good. It broke my heart into a million little pieces and then showed that there's always a chance for hope.
The story jumps between a young woman doing all she can to save art in Paris during the Nazi occupation in World War II and a woman trying to get over a horrible loss while staying in a house in the French Riviera in 2015. Lester writes a beautiful tale that weaves historical facts with heartbreaking and inspiring humanity. It's full of twists and turns that just keep upping the ante until it's a frenzied ride on an emotional rollercoaster that you can't help but enjoy.
Many happy thanks to NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the emotional read!

4.5 stars...Another WWII book for myself. I can't get enough, I can't believe there are so many to read! Loved the dual timeline, worked well.
