Watching Gerard Butler in the live action HTTYD movie got me thinking about Phantom and wanting to reread this. The last time I read it I was in fifth grade. I loved it then but I wasn't sure it would still hold weight. Finishing it again it's even better than I remembered.
This is Gothic horror at its best. I love the crumbling haunted opera house. I love the spooky phantom who symbolizes many things. I love the little details that don't exist in the musical but also the things that make the musical even better. Erik is the funniest name for a dead musical genius sociopath. I love everything about this.

See, this book...ah, this book. I am a mega fan of the musical, probably to an unhealthy point to be completely honest. I can recite each of the notes that Firmin, Andre, Raoul, and Carlotta receive from the Phantom. So, I figured: 'I can't say I'm a Phantom mega fan without reading the original source material'. So I picked it up and...I was kinda bored out of my mind, to be completely honest. I understand that the story changed drastically for the musical and that characters were changed, etc, etc. Even still, it was hard to wrap my head around it at times. Particularly Raoul. Talk about dramatic. Although I am definitely more of an Erik fan every time, I still like Raoul as a character, so seeing him crying at the littlest thing was really not enjoyable. Even still, I enjoyed getting to see an emotional Erik in the book as well as in the musical. Seeing him portrayed as JUST a crazy person who lives in the catacombs of the Opera breaks my heart because there is so much more to him as a character, so seeing that in the book was very enjoyable. As always, the Final Lair portion was my personal favourite, as it is my favourite in the musical as well. I loved getting to see Nadir - the Daroga - because his friendship with Erik is one of my favourite things to come out of Susan Kay's 'Phantom' novel and I am eternally disappointed that he didn't make it into the musical. Seeing Erik die at the end of the novel shattered my heart because you get to see how broken he is after he lets Christine go - it literally kills him. Even still, I agree with Gaston Leroux's quote about Erik - "Erik is not truly dead. He lives on within the souls of those who choose to listen to the music of the night."
