This was a really fun read, VERY melodramatic, very dark.
For me it was quite balanced in the way the characters were unlikable but not enough to despise them completely,
I actually loved this very much, went through it in like 3 days

I listened to The Phantom of the Opera (Original Cast Recording) on cassette incessantly as a preteen. I still know most of the words, I still love the music, and I still think it's the greatest musical ever, because how can you not?

I thought the book was going to be a lot different. A number of people that I follow on GR had said it was just "okay," so I figured it was another one of those classics that I'd be left wondering why they were classics.
NOPE! Same story I loved with a few new elements for me. I liked the detective-style narrative, and I was really surprised and pleased by the humor! This is old dark comedy, people!
The Phantom is extra creepy-looking in the book, unlike his attractive adaptations.

Mmm, Poe-flavored Phantom.
Christine and Raoul's story is essentially the same, but unlike their musical counterparts who are played by older, more experienced actors, Raoul's twenty and brash and stupid and it just works better here. There's a lot of this:

Nooo! I'm so jealous! I want to marry Christine!
So, if you know the story of the musical, this could bore you with its similarity and lack of music (there's a lot of Faust instead of the operas written for the musical, obviously), but if you're a crazy die-hard fan, you could really enjoy it like I did.

Bye.

Absolutely wonderful book! So much more to it than the recent movie. A true love story filled with action and suspense!
