This is a very well written classic. Besides the fact that it was written in the early 1900s and thus the way they describe/talk about the character only known as "the Persian" is reflective of the views/culture in France at the time of its writing, it's overall still an interesting and engaging book by today's standards.

On a less serious note - the fact that I watched the Phantom of the Opera (the Gerald Butler/Emmy Rossum musical version) as a kid and thought Raoul was a little bitch boy - I feel vindicated. It's canon.

I love the musical, and now I love the book! The story is a little more intense and dark, but pretty similar to the musical. I would definitely recommend.
dark slow-paced

It’s tough for me to rate as I’ve seen the musical and loved it before reading the book. It was an rollercoaster of emotions. The beginning or more like 2/3 was only okay but I LOVED the ending and the setting.

I can't decide if I liked the book or not. It certainly wasn't bad, definitely a page-turner at times but I don't know. Something was missing. I didn't really got into the characters and the story turned out pretty random when I anticipated a big reveal.
