This was such an intriguing gothic horror-esque mystery. Every character within this, despite having different personalities and roles within the story, left me feeling both frustrated and sympathetic to their plight.
I am so glad that I was finally able to pick up Leroux's beautiful early twentieth century atmospheric mystery.
4 stars

this may well be my new favourite book of all time. i cannot think of a single flaw in this novel, and i adored everything i was presented with!! the writing was phenomenal, the humour, the tension, the uncertainty, the dark moments, the sad moments, everything was just brilliant, and the characters... what can i even say. 11/10.
“If I am the phantom, it is because man's hatred has made me so. If I am to be saved it is because your love redeems me.”
4 stars. Ugh, I’m so soft when it comes to Phantom of the Opera it’s my favorite broadway musical of all time and I could talk your ears off about it if you let me. I just adore Erik so much. Sure, he’s a murder and all of that but dammit I love me a good anti-hero who just wants to be loved. I can’t help it.
I’ve always meant to pick this book up but then would just never get around to it and just watch the show/listen to the soundtrack instead. This book is definitely worth the read in my opinion. I loved the writing, it’s very scenic and beautiful. There was some surprisingly good humor in this that made me laugh. Particularly Carlotta and her quacking. I didn’t mind book Christine and I actually kinda liked Raoul as well which was shocking. Erik is clearly the star here though and he was wonderful and heartbreaking. The ending and epilogue broke me in the worst way but it's fine I'm okay.i'm actually not okay, send help.
I will say that there were some very dry parts in this that kinda messed up the flow of the story a bit and that’s why I’m giving it four instead of five stars but it’s still such a fantastic read.

The "Opera Ghost" keeps signing his letters OG which has a whole new meaning 100+ years (and American audience) on
Every time I see it I giggle. Ghost is causing havoc like a real O. G. ?
This book is very quick paced and clippy for a classic. While there is not a lot of action the dialogue and characters decisions keep the story propelling forward. It was easy to fly through the pages. Beyond this I am unsure how much I will retain from the story. The idea of the story is obviously resonating through the years -creepy old man becomes obsessed with young girl and ruins lives - and I don't mean his looks, the man lives underground and pretends to be a ghost; I had a hard time finding empathy for the characters. I am unsure if that is due to the pacing, poor translation, or the time period I am reading it in.

I have always enjoyed the musical versions of Phantom of the Opera and finally after all these years I read the book. The book is fantastic! There are parts in the movie which never quite made sense but having read the book they make more sense now. Of course the movie isn’t exactly like the book but I enjoy it even more now and of course the book is even better!! I find the opera house so fascinating and would love to go to Paris to see the opera house the book is based on. I would definitely recommend this book and will most likely read it again.
