Very romance heavy. I found it surprisingly easy to read compared to other books of the era. The adventure side of it when they were rescuing Christine was fun and the scenery sounded beautiful but unrealistic. The descriptions of the monster were creepy and the chandelier falling was a bit scary but it's not the scariest of gothic literature. A lot of the excitement is based on the "exotic" so it hasn't aged especially well.
