First, I have to make some things clear - first, I watched the play before I read the book. That was a bit of a mistake, because usually when I do that, I tend to compare the book to the movie (or in this case, musical). (Also, this probably won't be the best review ever, because I do not really know how to properly describe how I feel. But this book was amazing by itself. While I loved both versions equally, the book was very helpful as it gave you more background. You understood so much more about the characters and their story and even got background details that die hard fans would love to know. There are a lot of other differences, like more characters, sub-plots, and a different ending, but I believe anybody who has seen the musical would enjoy the book.

Now that I've talked about it in comparison with the play (in brief), I guess I'll talk about the book itself. It is a very moving, interesting book. It has definitely moved into my favorites list on Goodreads. You feel so much for the characters, especially the Phantom. By the end of the book, I felt like Christine. You pity him so much, you cannot hate him.
Spoiler I really wish Christine chose Erik. I mean, I know he was a psycho-maniac, but you just fall in love with him.
. I also liked that the story was set up as an article or exposé piece of some sort. While it was very moving, the story could also be funny at times, especially with the antics of the Opera managers and Carlotta.

Whether you enjoyed the musical or are just looking for a book to read, I recommend The Phantom of the Opera. Hopefully you all will enjoy it.

This is more a story of obsession than it is a story of love. Erik wants nothing more than to have Christine, even to own her and not allow her to be around others. If he can’t have what he wants he wants all other people to suffer as he is.
I watched the musical of Phantom of the Opera as a child and although I probably didn’t understand all of the details at that time I still think it was a much more interesting portrayal.

I am not really wicked! Love me and you shall see.
What an absolute delight!! I enjoyed reading this book so much!! The prose is excellent and accessible and keeps you absolutely hooked. I had to physically restrain myself from continuing to read because I wanted it to last longer. The climax is wonderfully done in my opinion. Erik's speech at the end is so full of melancholy and love and passion.
I am kind of a sucker for characters like Erik and this book delivered. I am glad I read it.
