The book is beautifully written and delightfully gothic in its elements. It was very interesting to see how it differed from the classic musical. Leroux does an excellent job of getting the reader to reflect on the idea of beauty and love, and while the phantom is often described as monstrous, I was able to still have empathy for him because of the writing. The love is dramatic and full of ups and downs and seeing the relationship between Christine and Raoul evolve was also very satisfying.

Excellent dark romantic novel. A true classic that can often be confusing and frustrating yet will keep you on the edge of the seat. I gave a four star may be because I read the translated version (english) which often I found confusing. But it was worth reading and I have no regrets spending my NYC subway time with this treasure.

Eu não estava preparada para o quanto esse livro me horrorizou. A relação obsessiva do Erick com a Christine foi muito pior do que eu imaginava. O confronto final do livro me deixou sem palavras.
