Leigh Bardugo is such a talented writer! This is the perfect heist novel!
Five stars.
This book has a lot of hype. I turned the first page feeling slightly unsure, I really wanted to love it and I didn't know if I would. Then Kaz Breaker sauntered across the pages and there were no questions about how good this book was going to be. The story was good, the Oceans' movies meet fantasy. However what really made this story for me were the characters. Kaz of course, who felt like Artemis Fowl but more serious and gritty and less child genius and more my god he just pulled that man's eye out. What really made Kaz though are his insecurities, for every moment were he seemed indestructible he had another were he was most definitely scared and human.
Inej was amazing. The fact she had done bad things and lived in the barrel and still held her faith really showed her determination and made her interesting. How do you hold onto your saints when you've lived that life.
Then there was Matthias and Nina who I just wanted to lock in a room together and scream 'SORT IT
OUT NOW YOU IDIOTS!' at. I have never read a Grishaverse book so I also enjoyed learning about the magic system Nina used. I especially liked how she wasn't perfect or all powerful, she'd missed parts of her training and didn't have all the smile she needed.
Then finally there was Jesper and Wylan. Who were both great as well but I'm not going to rave about because I think I've made it clear that you should just read this book.
Come for the story and stay for the brilliant characters. I would recommend this to every human in existence because right now I am still shaking over the ending of this book while working out when I'll be able to get the next one and if I should watch the Netflix series before reading shadow and bone.

I am not typically a big fan of fantasy, but I took a chance on this one after it was highly recommended to me by friends. I loved it! It was a gripping adventure from start to finish, and I found myself very attached to and “rooting for” the characters (despite all their glaring moral flaws). I was initially worried this might be a little too “teen” for me, but I did not end up feeling that way at all - it was a perfectly appropriate read for an adult (I’m 30). Only docking a half star because there were occasional moments where I got lost in the descriptions and struggled to visualize what was going on, and also because I thought the resolution of the battle at the gorge was a bit of a deus ex machina. I did not see the double-cross at the end coming, and that left me invested in the story and excited to get my hands on the sequel!
Book and characters seem too childish for my taste

Solid heist adventure! Enjoyed the main thrust of the narrative and thought weaving our characters backstories throughout was skillfully done. The characters felt a bit one-note and had a bit too much plot armor for any suspense to build. Recommend for a light read that you enjoy but probably forget about.

I did like this book, but it was so confusing in the first 100 pages. It was just leading me on and on. Other than that, I enjoyed it.

15 year old me would have rated this a 4 or 4.5 but unfortunately it didnt ring the same for adult me. Solid, struggled a bit with pacing toward the end. Honestly could've done with either more or less.
