I really wanted to like this. The Amazon Prime TV show adaptation of this book/the actual NYT column has been recommended to me several times, so, true to form, I wanted to read the book first. My general thoughts about it are that I think I would enjoy this in a TV show wayyy more than in a book. I didn't like several of the stories (mainly because I did NOT agree with anything the people did or stood for) and I just had no skin in the game, as it were. I think this short story format is best suited for the small screen, not a book format. After a while, I got very tired of reading these stories and just decided that, for my own sake, I would DNF this sucker and move on.

Love sure is a complicated and messy and beautiful thing. This was such a wonderful collection of essays -- and a good encouragement to read and listen to the NYTimes column and podcast more regularly!

Favorites, for record-keeping, include: The Race Grows Sweeter...; When Eve and Eve Bit the Apple; You May Want to Marry My Husband; Something Like Motherhood; Now I Need a Place to Hide Away, and Just Holding on through the Curves.

Good stuff.
