A waste of 400 pages, beyond boring and terrible. Only finished so I could count it towards the reading challenge I’m so far behind on for the year.

The main character sucks so much, but I couldn’t help getting pulled into the world.

There is no better description for this book than "Harry Potter goes to college". Seriously. Take a Hogwarts-style school, make it a college (so the kids are older...lots of naughtyness) drop it in upstate New York, create a new kind of bad guy. That's "The Magicians."

Awesome book.

This was my 2nd go at this book and I enjoyed it more this time. You have to let go of the "This is an adult version of Harry Potter" and just enjoy the book on its own merits. Also, if you are a musician, especially a cello player (or in my case a cello player's parent), you will enjoy all of the allusions to cello playing. If you are literary nerd, you will enjoy all the literary allusions.

The main character is annoying and a little too perfect and nonchalant. And the dude who ordered all the glasses of water, what is your problem?

LOVELOVE. I know plenty of people who were displeased with the ending, but I loved this book all the way through. I loved Q, then I hated him, then I loved him again.

Excellent writing--third-person narration with an intimate first-person feel. Great description that is vivid and engaging. Characterization is okay--I know why it's hard to like Quentin, I get it, but it is still very hard to like Quentin and keep reading about what he is doing. Some of it seems contradictory (he is cowardly but wants to punch people all the time, he is bookish but unable to use his studies in a productive way, etc.). Though his characterization at the end was much better, and made for a satisfying ending. Overall, a good read. Not sure if I'm going to read the rest in the series yet.

Loved it sometimes and was deeply bored other times. Could have edited the middle third down so much. Also some sheer nonsense in descriptions of women - I suppose it was in character for the stunted teenage male protagonist but it was lame enough to bring me out of the story to shake my damn head.
