I really wanted to like this book and it did have its moments. It is billed as Harry Potter for adults, but is really more Bright Lights Big City with a little magic thrown in. I'm continuing with the second book to see if it improves as the characters mature. We shall see.

Lovers of fantasy should consider this novel a must-read. In addition to the joy of finding pieces of fantasy classics in the text and recognizing obsessive love over said books in Quentin that I have felt myself, the story is beautiful in and of itself.

The story itself is great, however the main character is insufferable (negative, pouty, and always blaming everyone but himself for his own problems) and the writing style was a bit slow for me.
I do think I'll read the next book, I'm hoping book one's events have developed Quentin's character to be less annoying in the next installment.

Quentin’s a whiny little snot who can’t stop feeling sorry for himself. Hate to say it but the show is way better.
It's like The Chronicles of Narnia meets The Catcher in the Rye.
