I don't understand why people hate so much on this book or even Quentin. All his thoughts are those of one whom would be lost if were ever to enter the world of his child dreams. The book is, at times, a bit slow paced or confusing, but all the characters are empathical.

Really thought about DNFing this book and I will say that the end is probably the best part of it. Some good moments but honestly this book is just doing too much compared to what I normally like to read. Would have loved if some parts of it were drawn out more and the story wasn’t so rushed. Also just did not care about one of the characters, which makes it hard to really love a book

This book is trash. I don’t say that lightly. It’s one of the rare times when a tv adaptation is better than the book. I don’t think this book would even have the success it does if it wasn’t for the author being employed by the NYT. It’s misogynistic as hell & Quinton is the most boring over privileged protagonist. Surely we have enough stories about that type of character by now? Anyways, it is a great concept. The allure of “Harry Potter meets Chronicles of Narnia but they’re all old enough to party” is undeniable. I love that the show exists and what that writers room has added to this concept is simply the chef’s kiss we deserve.

Just finished the audiobook—I loved the Syfy series and was pleasantly surprised to enjoy this so much. I had convinced myself I wouldn’t like the books. When they came out I was so deep in HP hatred that I couldn’t deal with another book series about magic and didn’t understand how it is much more of a send up than a straight up homage.

Focus was more on relationship problems. Magic seemed to be in the background and not really explained very much. There were several things (difficult situations, enemies, etc.) that were over quickly, and often ended abruptly without much explanation. However, the descriptions of the characters’ inner turmoil seemed to go on too long most of the time.

As a big fan of the TV show I was eager to finally read this.  I love the characters and the story, the pacing seems at times a bit odd and overly fast, not allowing us to sit with the story and jumping forward months/years at a time.  But overall very enjoyable.
