DID NOT FINISH: 62%

Stopped 62% of the way in right at the beginning of Book II. Just could not deal with the terrible pacing and lack of investment I felt towards the characters and plot.

Hmmm. After I read this I kept thinking of:

WARNING: due to scenes of violence, sexuality, and coarse language [reader] discretion is advised...

I enjoyed it, but there were definitely some darker elements! I've heard it described as "Harry Potter for adults" which is misleading. There are definite nods to HP as well as the Narnia books, but Magicians is definitely a grittier, more contemplative look at what the possibilities are for magic in our world (and other worlds) as well as the repercussions.

Not a "Favourite" but definitely worth reading.

Really liked this! It has some slow moments, but it's definitely a book that builds towards the ending. Yes, the lead character can be quite annoying and isn't super likable, but I found him to be a realistically-annoying person (which is actually a good thing), someone I could understand. Don't go into this expecting "Harry Potter for adults" though, as this book is often described - the post-graduation stuff is where the story REALLY begins. Definitely reading the sequel soon!

awesome

I wanted to like this book and was excited to start a series that was lauded as the 'adult Harry Potter'. Unfortunately I just could not fall in love with this book. The characters were all obnoxious and unlikable. The main character was the worst of them all. His hypocrisy was alienating. I was bored throughout most of this book. It only got remotely interesting in the final ten percent of the book and even then it wasn't enough to make me like or recommend. Oh, and don't even get me started on the scene where the characters turn into foxes and have sex...sheesh....
