2,5 stars; the poems did not resonate with me that much; some good bits; this is the author on hearing his lung cancer diagnosis from his doctor;

“I wish I had some other kind of news to give you
I said Amen and he said something else
I didn’t catch and not knowing what else to do and not wanting him to have to repeat it and me to have to fully digest it
I just looked at him for a minute and he looked back it was then
I jumped up and shook hands with this man who’d just given me
something no one else on earth had ever given me
I may even have thanked him habit being so strong”

I don't feel it'd be fair to rate this. It just didn't do anything for me - I'm sorry Raymond!

The late life of Raymond Carver and the love of Tess Gallagher comes pouring from this book. A lovely and courageous final book that grapples with terminal illness, defiantly continues the work of creation and loving, and reflects on a life nearing its early completion. Devastating, remarkable.

My first Carver, his last book. I need more.

I light my first cigarette of the day and turn away from
the window with a shudder. The foghorn sounds again, filling me with apprehension, and then, then stupendous grief.

Raymond Carver's prose has helped shape my view of the world. I read his work at a time of my life where I was in desperate need of a father figure and a purpose, and his writing helped fulfill those things. Carver's poetry is not as strong as his prose, but the poetry is sometimes flickering with the same intensity as his best prose paragraphs. I wish he had explored this writing much more thoroughly before his untimely death.

The intro to this book is so moving and sad, and gives so much context to the work within. A tragic but beautiful collection. Still can't decide if it's better to know you're dying, to have the time to reflect on it and enact final wishes and what not (this book is proof of how agonizing it must be), or to just be surprised by a sudden end someday.

Took me quite a while longer than I expected to finish this—because life and responsibilities get in the way—but loved this, nonetheless. Love how Carver wove his sometimes-strange but always interesting, thought-provoking stories of this seemingly mundane world into poetry, giving off the same vibe his short fiction does. Super recommended for anyone looking for a quick read.
