Emphasis on the dark. Not sure if my heart can handle the next one.

The plot? Intricately woven and brilliantly crafted. The characters? Often loveable, almost all deeply flawed in very human feeling ways. The stakes? As high as they can be. The worldbuilding? Detailed and lush. The pacing? Relentless.

The Red Rising Saga just keeps getting better and better. Pierce Brown put a cinderblock on the gas pedal on the first page of the first book, and 5 books in just keeps adding weight. I have never read a series where the action is so nonstop.

If I saw one major fault with the series early on, it was the writing style. But even that has improved dramatically. I can not sing this book or this series high enough praise. It is the best sci-fi series I have ever read.

I dropped this series 8 or so years ago because Darrow's decline from a man of the people into a man of war made my heart too sad. Picking this book up after so many years later and I forgot just how gruesome the Red Rising series can be. I know it's called Dark Age, but goddamn, read the content warnings. Once again, characters you love die and things only get worse for our cast. Fingers crossed that it eventually looks up.
