i think this felt very much like a first draft — themes & ideas were there i just wish they were fleshed out more :( the south asian diaspora has such beautiful poets to draw inspiration from so i think i find it hard to enjoy stream of consciousness poetry like this
Minor: Racism, Rape, Islamophobia, Colonisation, and War

Unfortunately not for me. I appreciated the exploration of form via the poem in a floor plan, poem in a cross word, etc. but there wasn't much that stood out to me, or resonated.

This was such a great poetry collection. As someone who doesn't read poetry often, I wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by this. It was a deep and emotional read and surprisingly educational. I'll be honest, before reading this I wasn't aware of the India-Pakistan partition Asghar writes about. The use of foreign words intertwined in the poems was a good touch. While all the poems were not my taste, that is to be expected. There were many that I enjoyed. It was interesting to see how Asghar experimented with different forms, too. Overall, this a heart-wrenching read about loss, coming-of-age, and living in America as a Pakistani, Kashmiri, Muslim, American.

This collection is more stream-of-consciousness essays than poetry. I’ve heard rap beef songs more poetic than this

‘I whisper
my country my country my country
& my hands stay empty.
what is land but land? a camp
but a camp? sanctuary
but another grave? I am an architect.
I permission everything
into something new.
I build & build
& someone takes it away’
