This is just such a dudebro book. It's ostensibly a split POV between two super tropey characters: we have Perfect Specimen From Privileged Society With Rippling Abs (Male) and Manic Pixie Hottie From Underdog Class Who's Nonetheless Perfect (Female). The world-building has some merit, but there's so much weirdly religious stuff thrown around, and written in a way that makes it clear the author thinks he's being clever, but actually just shows that he can't write 'religions' outside of a Christian-centred framework. Lots of misogyny and some fun islamophobia/xenophobia thrown in because why not, right? Add in a smattering of possession, or something similar, and it just goes nowhere fast. I can't believe it's just the first part; if the author wasn't so into hearing himself waffle on, he could probably have condensed the whole sorry series into one book, which already would have benefited from heavy editing. There's a borderline cliffhanger ending but if you manage to get that far, you honestly won't care enough to pick up the next book. Don't waste your time.
