This was genuinely one of the most violent, disturbing, and graphic things I have ever read. And it’s supposed to be for children   I much prefer the movie for the simple A rating and lightheartedness.

Beyond that, I just could not get as into it as I wanted. Maybe I’m too old for it now, but I struggle with reading books from an animal's perspective. At least I can say I tried. Now to rewatch the movie

Young owls are being kidnapped and indoctrinated into a cult. Soren realizes what's happening before the brainwashing takes hold and struggles to find a way to escape and maintain his individuality.

This is a pretty disturbing book. So many horrid and manipulative things happen in this owl cult. Great but not for the fainthearted young reader.

if you read these books as a kid and think maybe i should reread them do not. the writing itself isn't great but it's not horrible. my main issue is the weird allegories for race in this owl society. it's not cohesive at all and makes you feel weird reading it. the owls all think other birds are not as good of species as them and they have slave snakes.

I rarely ever star rate a book that I DNF but since I got so close to finishing before I finally just gave in, I'm going to do it anyway. It took me four days to read 150 pages of a children's book. Do you realize how many times I had to have started and set it down for that to happen? I was planning on knocking this out in a couple hours, max. But no-- Every time I touched it, I immediately thought of allllllll the wonderful things I could be doing with my time instead.

Like having a root canal.

I cannot stress how boring I found this book. How snail like the pace crawled along. How I dropped it without finding out the ending-- AND I DON'T CARE. Complete waste of what time I did spend on it and the star rating comes 50% from the book itself and 50% from my frustration with having wasted my life on it.

Let your kids read Guardians of Ga'Hoole!  It has:

  • Kidnapping!
  • Children being indoctrinated into a cult!
    • Psychological torture!
    • Public humiliation!
    • Plucking!
  • Cannibalism!
  • A really racist snake!
  • Death!
    • One owl eviscerated another with metal talon covers
    • An owl who can't fly is thrown off a cliff
    • Multiple owls are torn apart by eagles
    • An owl chick is eaten whole by an adult owl (see: cannibalism)
  • And of course, TRAUMA!

I think a lot more people should read this! I feel like it could have a fan base similar to Wings of Fire and Warriors, which i would absolutely love!

Wasn't as engaging as I thought it would be. Never picked this series up as a kid, but felt the need to try it. Audiobook didn't really help, as the narrator gave some characters voices that were really grating after a while. The worldbuilding was interesting, but a little vague for a first book. Honestly not sure if I'll continue the series past this one.

Hot Take: The movie adaptation might have worked better.
