West Side Live Story by Priscilla Oliveras
I absolutely loved this book! It is phenomenal! I am so here for all female Mariachi!

This is the second time I've read this book and I still love it so much! My cousin-in-love is in an All Female Mariachi and the ladies of  Flor de Toloache SLAY!

Things I am here for:
Romeo and Juliet/West Side Story retelling
Authentic Latina/o/e/x representation
Star crossed lovers
Mariachi!
All Female Mariachi!
Strong women
Found family, foster children/adults, past trauma and finding the family you love
All of the nuances of those childhoods and growing into adults. There is so much care in this story.
Good and bad gentrification debate. How to revitalize communities, and keep culture, and longtime residents protected.
Spanish sprinkled throughout ❤️

This is my second book for The Diverse Baseline Challenge, the first for the January prompt of a Latina/o/e/x Author.

so cute.

You can always guess what’s going to happen next but, it’s still written well and had me turning the pages. I loved it. I love the mix of Spanglish mixed in. Made me feel like I was back home.

I loved this Romeo and Juliet retailing. Such a cute love story. I loved it! I am a fan of mariachi music so I really enjoyed that mariachi was apart of the story.

A contemporary take on Romeo and Juliet. I really enjoyed the Mariachi storyline. Mariana and Angelo meet not knowing the other is from the rival family. Their chemistry is clear and even though they know the families will object they can’t seem to resist the pull. A story that blends family, romance and culture into a heartfelt tale.

West Side Story is one of my favorite musicals, and I was so excited to read this modern retelling of Romeo & Juliet for our June Literary Devices Book Club discussion. My favorite parts of the book:
-The romance between Angelo and Mariana -- after having an unforgettable kiss on NYE and then discovering each other months later, only to realize they are from families with deep animosity toward each other, they have to decide whether or not to pursue their strong feelings for each other at the risk of their families finding out
-The family of foster sisters who formed an all-female mariachi band
-Angelo's deep care and sacrifice for family and loved ones, especially raising his young sister following his parents' untimely passing

Totally enchanted by the San Antonio setting and the musical prose that Oliveras sets the mariachi scene with in this series debut. I hope it will be a series anyway! The huge cast of secondary leaves many opportunities for exploration in future books, and all of the adopted sisters of the Capuleta family deserve to have an HEA!

I also love how the author captures the heat and pining between her love interests and gently fades them to black.
