There’s something special about an author’s first novel. Something inexplicably brave and daring in its creativity and energy. a good family represents everything exciting about a debut, and Kim weaves a thought-provoking study of family that will give you much to chew on!

3.5 stars. I enjoyed the audiobook version of this. The story was entertaining and I really liked the author’s writing style. Recommended as a fun summer read.

Even though some of the clues were HIGHLY telegraphed, there was still enough mystery for me to enjoy this to the end. I liked all the characters, except for Sam obviously, even the mother. A good weekend read.

Wow! I really didn’t know what to expect when I started this book. I like the multiple POV—it was never boring. I do think it would be interesting to know a bit more about the other characters in a spin-off. Sam was surprisingly less than likable despite all that had happened. Nevertheless, the ending still surprised me. Definitely would recommend and would love to read more from this author. I received an ARC from NetGalley.

Summary for myself: a former Big Pharma lady is going to prison, but who snitched on her? The Big Pharma lady's sister-in-law Hannah narrates.

A perfect three-star book; of all the literary fiction I’ve fead this year, it’s by far the least literary. Page-turningly interesting, but shockingly shallow, blandly written, and confusingly organised. I liked the characters and was quite surprised by the plot throughout. The style itself was unremarkable to the point of grating on me with its blandness, and I absolutely hated the constant flashbacks (and flashbacks within flashbacks). In a way, it felt like this was written to be a Netflix miniseries, not a standalone novel. The scenes involving prison or working at a law firm didn’t feel authentic, to say nothing of the scenes about being a sibling (and I say this as someone who grew up an only child). All that being said, I was genuinely invested in the story, genuinely stunned by the twists, and genuinely enjoying myself the whole time. Even the mediocrity of the writing didn’t make me “mad,” per se; this whole book was overall inoffensive (aside from the totally-glossed-over pedophilia? And pseudo-incestuous sexual assault?). Enjoyable, yes, but not one I’ll be recommending to anyone.
