Sex and death, one the extension of the other.
The power play between men and women.
Higher powers lurking in the shadows.
TRAUMNOVELLE is a layered novella, a rich and beautifully told fairy tale as Kubrick's EYES WIDE SHUT. Over 100 years since its publication, Schnitzler's writing manages to still be deeply relevant in its exploration of lust, marriage, and relationships. A must-read!

Sogno? Realtà che sembra un sogno? Sogno che si basa sulla realtà? No, non fa per me.
Loved the dreamlike and mysterious atmosphere, coupled with the (for the 1920s pretty explicit) discussions of sex and adultery. What mostly stands out in my mind though, beyond the secret society orgies or suicides, is the descriptions of a city at night - the coffee-houses, taxicabs, prostitute alleys, and the stench of death hoveringly ever so slightly over anything. Vienna at the turn of the 19th century is pretty similar to cities nowadays, minus the cars and smog and skyscrapers I suppose.
A beautiful personification of the idea of angst, and the basis for Stanley Kubrick's final film, as discussed in the combined work [b: Eyes Wide Shut & Dream Story|402008|Eyes Wide Shut & Dream Story|Stanley Kubrick|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1387707923s/402008.jpg|1414352]

I can only imagine how this terribly shocking this seemed when first published in 1925. A lot of inner turmoil, and much of it understated to modern ears. Strong in terms of generating the kind of atmosphere and imagery that allows Schnitzler requires to pull-off the dreamlike, Freudian fantasy that essentially underwrites the text, it whizzes by and is well worth the read.
