meh.

I found out about this book after falling down a Wikipedia rabbit hole. It was definitely a can't-put-down book. I am amazed how close "Eyes Wide Shut" stuck to the story presented here, but the actors (okay, Tom Cruise) couldn't convey the depth of the story. At the risk of sounding cliche, the book was so much better.

3,5 ++ * (not sure what to rate this exactly)

A wonderful book with a lot of depth to it. An exploration and expression of hidden desire, I could really 'feel' the story. Schnitzler shows us the main characters feelings and how these become overpowering in a dreamlike sort of way (also literally), and kind of rejects rational thinking.

I struggled a bit to get through the German, and missing a couple details because of that. Apart from that I'm not sure how I feel about emotions/desires having such a strong pull as to make us do or wish certain things. Maybe I just find it an uncomfortable thought this is true - why can't we just think our feelings into being, maybe that would be boring? The book shows an archetype (I think) and in that it's really strong. These thoughts are just some this book brought up for me and with that it became an even more interesting read.

Fridolin and Albertine are married with a child. One evening Albertine confesses to Fridolin that she had sexual phantasies involving a man she had seen during their vacation. That sets off Fridolin on an exploration into his life, his wishes and desires.

In 1926, when this was originally published, it was probably a pretty scandalous book. My thoughts were more along the lines of "oh, another guy exploring his midlife crisis!" Which is probably really shallow of me. Eroticism is only one aspect of this novella. It looks at our dreams, our wants and how we deal with them.

Go read some of the other reviews, they looked at this properly and made an effort to give you a well rounded and educated idea about this famous piece.

The movie Eyes Wide Shut is based on this novella, but I have never watched it, so I can't say how it compares.

The delivery of the German audiobook I listened to was pretty wooden.

Moral of the story:
It is important for people to have private thoughts that are never shared. Humans are naturally self destructive and when there’s too much true and openness in the world; our natural defences kick in.

keep forgetting to watch eyes wide shut wonder wonder if it encapsulated this novella well
