This is a short story that works like a prologue to Pretty Girls, but I'm happy to have read them in reverse order. Getting through Pretty Girls gave me depth that made me want to go ahead and listen to the story that I otherwise would not have had interest for. It's well written and a nice little tidbit for what is to come.

This was included in [b:Pretty Girls|40017404|Pretty Girls|Karin Slaughter|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1525183635l/40017404._SY75_.jpg|42937661], as an ominous prequel. Ugh. It was like a train wreck, I couldn't look away -- er, stop reading. So much for taking a break from crime fiction/mystery/thriller. No really, I need a break from crime fiction/mystery/thriller... especially since these stories all seem to show that women are victims from male predators.

Lots of fluff. As a prequel to pretty girls, I was expecting a lot more of Julia’s story during captivity but it was basically one long character build for Julia instead. 2.5*

A short story by the incredible Karin Slaughter. Usually I find short stories very hit and miss - they can lack a lot of detail and skip over bits of the narrative, or they can be hugely predictable and over too quickly. But this one was extremely well written! It has a really good narrative that flows through the whole story, lots of characters who we get to know quickly, drama, suspense and a great ending. It’s only around an hours read so a really good option if you need a little break from hard hitting, lengthy books. I’ve never read a Karin Slaughter book I don’t like and this is just as good as her full length books - highly recommended!
