A classic, not sure why it took me so long to read this book but I'm glad I finally did!

Her daughter was gone. Ten years later she was moving on...finally. But was her daughter as gone as she thought?

Very slow start and I didn't think it was going to pick up. Almost to the end I said out loud "well I still don't understand". Middle gave us all the info but the characters still didn't know. Then the last few pages were just like oh, what's the point of the book of the main character doesn't know guess I better tell her.

Potentially a good story I just didn't enjoy the way it was presented.

Will not read again.

Unfortunately, this book ranks very low for me. This was a book club pick, and as soon as I started reading it, I was disappointed with the writing and dialogue styles. As the chapters go on, other characters' POVs start getting incorporated and any attempt to distinguish their voices is disappointing (ex. the Irish character's only difference is voice is the frequent incorporation of the word "bonny"). Despite the writing, I was interested in seeing where the story went. Unfortunately it went into some hard no areas for me (I will add appropriate content warnings).
Given the intended audience ranges a little older, this book also falls prey to more traditional gender roles and the villanization of those who fall outside of them.
In the process of marking the villain as odd and "wrong" it is repeatedly emphasized that she is a virgin and that she has no mothering instinct at all.

This was a pretty good thriller but not much of a mystery. I feel we were given too much information so that the reveals were pretty easy to predict before they happened. However, it was a chilling premise and I really liked the cast of characters and the fact that it was told from the perspective of a middle aged woman, a perspective that is sadly uncommon in popular books.

It’s a decent book but I knew what had happened at about 40% in and the rest was just finding out the details and character development.
