Brilliant, twisted, dark, sad. A real page turner.

This was sooo fast paced and fun to read, and I REALLY wanted it to be a 5 star read, but in the end it did disappoint a bit. I wish there was more of a plot twist. Personally, I figured out the storyline just by reading the back of the book even before starting to actually read it. I was really wishing that there would be more to it, but in the end there wasn’t anything shocking revealed. The only twist I didn’t see coming was
that Hanna was seeing Theo
, and that wasn’t one bit significant to the storyline whatsoever, actually just a bit confusing why the author put that in there. There were some similar details in the book that just didn’t bear any significance and were a bit unnecessary.

I feel like the writing was very good and I couldn’t put it down, was really intrigued. But it wasn’t a psychological thriller to me, more just like a devastating story about
a child being kidnapped and abused
.

An eerie and creepy thriller! I loved this twisted story. I also loved how things were tied together at the end of the book. It was easy to follow and quick to read (which I love). One thing I didn’t understand was the reasoning behind Hanna and Theo getting together? I don’t really think it served purpose to the plot. I felt hurt for Floyd at the end as well, and wished him and Laurel could have worked things out together. Even though I did understand why he did what he did. I predicted the plot as soon as Ellie mentioned her period though while in Noelle’s basement. So, the book seemed a little monotonous after that for me. Overall though, it was a great twisted thriller book that I really enjoyed! An interesting concept for a plot that they somehow made work with a good story!!

I have a lot of feelings about this book. I devoured it for one. It kept me hooked from the very beginning and reminded me of Lovely Bones. There really wasn’t a twist in my opinion-
it is pretty obvious who Poppy’s mother is even before the book spells it out for you. I think a real twist would have been Ellie living but maybe that is just me wanting her to have survived.

I was also very disturbed by the way Laurel talked about her other daughter, Hanna. “Laurel had never accepted Hanna as a consolation prize”…

”Laurel is about to say, Oh, she was much prettier than Hanna”…

”Hanna. Her middle child. The difficult one. The tiring one. The one she wouldn’t want to be stranded on a desert island with. And a terrible thought shot through her, so fast she barely registered it. It should be you missing and Ellie eating beans on toast.“

I mean what kind of mom thinks this way about her daughter? I understand she is grieving but it’s horrible. Extremely disturbing, IMO, and left unaddressed other than a half-ass voicemail apology.

It loses some serious points from me because I was disturbed by how Laurel talked and thought about her middle child and how the book never really addresses these thoughts. The ending was also very unsatisfying and lacked a feeling of justice.
