i feel conflicted about this book. so to wrap it up , if your the type to make theories when reading, this is for you. but if your disappointed when all of your theories are met with nothing more, then it’s not. mediocre book, had potential to be way darker and twisted.

On the way to the library one evening, Laurel's fifteen-year-old daughter Ellie mysteriously disappeared. Following Ellie's disappearance, Laurel's world falls apart and her marriage ends. Now, ten years later, Laurel is finally seeing hope for the future when she meets a charming man named Floyd and his young daughter, Poppy. I'll leave it there when it comes to summarizing the plot in order to avoid any potential spoilers.

Though I haven't read too many thrillers/suspense novels in 2021, this is definitely near the top of the list of those I have read! This is a very creepy, suspenseful story that Jewell crafted expertly, doling out tidbits of information here and there. Though a bit predictable, its ability to entertain me throughout made up for that. This is a book in which alternating points-of-view and timelines, as well as short chapters, works especially well. I really enjoyed seeing how all the pieces of this story came together in the end.

Surprised to find Laurel rather an engaging character. Didn't know Lisa Jewell could write one, tbh!!

This served its precise purpose of being the thriller distraction I needed, hence my rating.  Helen Duff was an excellent narrator. It was exactly what I needed.

Pretty shit way to use your main Irish character - legit no reason for her to be Irish, other than being a British author with implicit biases.
