This story follows the pov of a senior Ellie Mack, weeks prior to her disappearance, and then switches perspectives to the mother after losing her daughter. It then shows the hardships of losing a child, but also not having the closure since her body was never found. Her marriage ended, her relationships with her other kids became insignificant to her, she was unable to be a mom, which haunted her immensely years later. She had animosity towards her daughter who was still alive, for being here instead of Ellie. The ending was chaotic but beautiful, seeing this family who could barely function together, seeing them together and happy at the end was wholesome, despite the tribulations they faced to get there. This book was addicting, while reading I had a lot of theories, and yet, was still wrong.

“But one wrong move, one tiny kink in the timeline, it was all over. Not just their love story, but all of it. Youth. Life. Ellie Mac. All gone. All gone forever.”
-Prologue
This is a story about a family that is struggling with the disappearance of their youngest daughter. She has been missing for 10 years. There is finally a break in the case, and the family is able to get closure-or so they think.
I haven’t picked up a thriller in a while, and this book delivered! It’s dark and twisty and makes your heart ache. I cried through the last chapter and the epilogue. It’s heartbreaking and beautiful.
The story is told from several perspectives. I was a bit thrown at first with the switch between the first and third person, past tense and present perfect tenses (personally, not my favorite of the tenses), but once I was able to get familiar with the pattern of the storytelling, it took off for me.
I pretty much had the story figured out early on, but I enjoyed reading how my suspicions would be confirmed. I really don’t want to say too much about this book, because I feel it needs to be unwrapped one page at a time. Definitely a “beach read“ thriller, but thoroughly enjoyable.
This is the first time I’ve read a Lisa Jewell novel, and I’m looking forward to reading more.

3 stars. I enjoyed it, but I was always a few steps ahead. It’s a very interesting story and the ending actually shocked me. I was a bit confused about the epilogue though.
