A New Dawn

Listen I love my space parents but this book was a solid "meh" for me. It took me a LONG time to get through, which is probably as much a me problem as much as a book problem. I just found it really hard to follow or connect with any characters besides Kanan and Hera. I also got confused by the constantly shifting POVs. It picked up enough in the middle for me to finish, when Hera became more of a main focus. I wish that it would have focused more on just their 2 perspectives rather than a throwaway never-seen-again villain and other characters I didn't really care about. It made me want to watch Rebels again though and the production of the audiobook was fun!

DID NOT FINISH

I was so disappointed with this book. I understand that it is the flagship novel for the new Star Wars continuity spearheaded by Disney, but seriously, the crux of the plot deals with mining disputes. Yes, it is as boring as it sounds. Not to mention that the characters are uninteresting and the writing mediocre at best. I consider myself a big fan of John Jackson Miller's comic work (Knights of the Old Republic in particular) but here it seems as if everything wrong with the prequels was quashed into three hundred pages of text; whereas in the writer's other projects his dialogue crackles, the plot is gripping, and the setting is striking. I'm frankly bewildered by the praises I've seen given this book. If anyone wants to help offset this genuine confusion I would welcome their insight. This book wasn't disheartening enough to swear me off the forthcoming EU novels entirely, but it's certainly not the promising start, or dawn, I'd hoped for.

Ok, kinda.

Kanan is a fuck boi

One of the best canon novels I've read, up there with the Thrawn book

Glad that there's some new stuff out there that's canon now! Good book overall- started pretty slow for me but glad to have the story of how Kanan and Hera met before watching the show. Nice backstory.

it was cute? i love to see my sw mom and dad but it was so weird to see them as younger babies. idk it was fun star wars, nothing revolutionary, but still a good time

not a huge fan of the plot, but really enjoyed the development between kanan and hera. i think jjm did a wonderful job characterizing them (kanan being obsessed with hera and hera affectionately tolerating it), but it also makes me a little sad to think about how much time they could have had together. i think it was a great supplement to rebels and now i want to watch it again!!
