It was good. I enjoyed the characters, but the setting was all in one place and occasionally got stagnant.

This book more fun than anything. Tons of action yet still plenty of socio-political dialogue to keep this from being a straight space adventure. The character arcs are beautifully done and the usage of multiple viewpoints shows just how complex the situation at hand really is. The cover art may be a bit misleading though, there are no lightsaber duels in this one. And that's honestly one of the only criticisms I can give it. Not giving it 5 starts personally because I more of a Trekkie and there were moments where there was a bit too much action and killing for me.

I enjoyed the book, but I think I benefited from watching Rebels first. It’s more like 3 1/2 stars.

Kanan really starts out as a jackass. He seemed to be going where the villain, Vidian, already was. It was interesting to see peaks into his childhood and how he finds his path again.

Hera isn’t given much of story. I believe that was being saved for the show. It didn’t bug me because, well, I’ve seen the show. 😀

The Kanan/Hera ship is too strong, even if it is one sided. It would make sense if the show had it stronger, but since it doesn’t, it feels out of place here. I suppose that’s not really a fault on either side, but it’s still off.

The other characters are great. Skelly. Zaluna. Sloan, who I read about elsewhere already.

Vidian... He gets a bit evil for the sake of evil at times, but I also felt like I was watching his descent into madness. His last grand evil plan just would not have worked without him getting into major trouble...despite the book saying otherwise.

I am a fan of the rebels cartoon series and have been curious about the cast. When the series begins almost all of the ghost's crew are already in place and numerous adventures have happened. This book begins to fill us in on some of the things that happened before the series. It's also a very sweet introduction to the romantic relationship between Hera and Kanan. We see glimpses in the series but we don't know about the devotion that forms the bonds of the relationship until this book.

As a longtime casual Star Wars fan (born after the original trilogy but long before the sequels) I dabbled in the Star Wars expanded universe in my youth. Then, a casual, too-lazy-to-change-the-channel viewing of Star Wars Rebels piqued my interest, leading me to me pick up this book. I'm glad I did, because it was a lot of fun. For a tie-in with a kids' show, it had some dark moments, and it might have just been my imagination, but there were some real-world parallels that, while not fully explored, surprised me by being there at all.

I wouldn't say it was slow or boring at the beginning, but it did take me a while to get into the story. After about 100 pages, it moved very quickly (it only took a day to read) and it was a good ride. There were several Star Warsy moments, which made me smile/cringe, but I was expecting that.

Where the book really succeeded was in character development, especially for the good guys. The two main characters came off as whole and interesting, and they were fun to root for. The supporting characters had some nuance, too. I would definitely be up for following this crew on another adventure.

Putting the whole similarity of the name of this book with the name of the first movie of the original trilogy aside, this was an excellent read that I enjoyed a lot.

I will never pick my favorite between Kanan and Hera. They are both high up on my favorite Star Wars characters list and I love them both to death. This book really showed their personalities, but also gave us back story into how they became so involved with each other. There wasn't always Kanan and Hera, but in my mind, it was fate... Or maybe the force that brought them together.

Favorite Quote:
“But seeing and doing nothing isn’t the worst thing,” Hera had said. “The worst thing is to see and not to care.”

That quote really hit home to me, as it fits with what is going on in the world today. There is a lot of seeing and not caring going on and it makes my heart hurt.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars and as you all know, I don't review the Star Wars books much as they can be hard for me to enjoy side characters I'm not thrilled with. This one was the exact opposite. A wonderful story that I will cherish forever.

This is not Hera & Kanan’s story. It’s Kanan’s story, with Hera only appearing from under Kanan & the author’s greasy gaze to have her physical appearance ‘appreciated’, or to appreciate Kanan.

A few enjoyable bits, but definitely not the book I wanted.
