adventurous

all in all a fun and easy read. The world building was lacking, the characters didn’t have a lot of chemistry and a lot of what happened felt cliché or too superficial, but I still wanted to keep reading and see where this was all going. I will say though that if I didn’t know this was a sapphic series I would not have bothered reading the second book. But I will !!

Didn't expect to get hooked, but got hooked nonetheless! The plot is interesting despite the worldbuilding being a bit confusing at times. Sometimes a bit predictable, but in a good way - there are always little surprises within! I loved the chemistry between the main characters, toooo~ I really liked this read, and feel compelled to start the sequel as soon as I can get my hands on it.

perfect. absolutely no notes. such an interesting plot with so many twists and turns that elicited big reactions in me. such compelling, characters and an even more well done relationship with so much tension, sweetness, and angst. very solid political fantasy and a fleshed out world, with a war that i actually care about (which is so rare for me bcs despite being a fantasy reader i quickly get bored of wars…lol.) also the most clever, thoughtful, resonating metaphor for internalized homophobia and handles themes of coming to terms with queerness in a way that is both heart wrenchingly real and subtle/stylistic.

actually i do have one note: sometimes the flashbacks got a little overused and tedious. the one and only issue i had with this book and its so minor.

crieralya you are everything to me

4 stars. This was a pretty interesting read. I will say however that as much as this book has been hyped for the romance I wasn’t feeling it. I hope the sparks between Crier and Ayla get better in book two because there was none here in my opinion. They had no chemistry. However, I did like both of their characters a lot. I thought they were both interested and complex individuals. Some of the side characters were great as well. Everything about this book worked for me except the romance basically.

I loved the writing and the world building. The political aspect was good and kept me intrigued. I was never bored reading this but I will admit that it took a little bit for me to get into. Once I did it was smooth sailing from there. The ending definitely made me want to immediately pick up book two. Overall, this was a good first book and I’m excited to see what happens next.

Solid world building, but slow start. The plot doesn’t really start to thicken until 100 pages in. Once it did, I was hooked, and I’ll probably read the second one, but it wasn’t Earth-shattering.

4.5 maybe?

i loved the romance and the tenderness between Crier and Ayla as well as the writing style, but i found myself not as interested in the plot / conflict that much. i also found myself just not knowing who so many of the side characters were (especially the ones that were not alive but mentioned so many times) but i have the memory of a goldfish so that's probably my fault and not the books

super excited for the sequel though, i can't wait to see where this goes
