There’s a lot I wanted this book to be that it wasn’t and there’s a lot that I wanted it to be that it was. The world itself and the concept are excellent. I love the way the Automae are described and the societal structure. There’s not a lot of info-dumping and plenty of good world-building to make sure you discover this as it goes on.

The main characters are… alright, they could probably use a little more fleshing out but I’m willing to give that a pass. The romance comes across as a bit instalove on one side and could have done with some more development.

The prose however and the pacing really comes across as an issue to me. You could probably play YA bingo with this since it hits many of the same clichés that we’ve seen time and time again. Everyone is also so laughably bad at espionage that it’s a wonder there’s any humans left to lead the Rebellion (TM). You have to slog through about 50% of the book before anything exciting happens though it does rapidly pick up the pace from there.

It’s still enough to get me to read the second one but overall, not quite what I had hoped it would be.
