okay. I was supposed to read kids' books for Read Harder 2019, so I wasn't expecting much.
This book sucked me in with the color and the contrasting art styles. It starts with word balloons and comic book panels to show distance between the grandfather and grandson. Then the grandson draws with marker and the grandfather adds black and white ink art. The two art styles combine on adventures and the text is incorporated into the art. It goes back to the panels, but there has been an exchange of art tools.
It's breath-takingly beautiful. I love the theme of the picture book.

Exploring the language barrier that can even divide families, Minh Le and Dan Santat find common ground in art -- language that speaks without words. Their young protagonist spends afternoons with his grandfather, who appears to speak only Vietnamese. Communication is difficult, and the boy doesn't feel they have anything at all in common, until he's sketching action heroes at the table. His grandfather brings out a sketchbook as well and, though their art styles differ, they both seem to have a fondness for the heroic! Santat does a great job of creating two distinct art personalities, and melds them beautifully into pages that dance with adventure. This is both a sweet story, and a visual treat.
There are always those authors and illustrators that I feel can do no wrong and both Minh Le and Dan Santat fall into that category. Drawn Together is a book with few words, but contains such a robust story. It follows a young boy who spends time with his grandfather. The two have trouble communicating (there doesn't appear to be any shared language). I have seen reviewers question the likelihood that the young boy wouldn't know some of his grandfather's language and the grandfather wouldn't know some of his; however, I think that this book goes deeper than illustrating language barriers. It also illustrates the invisible barriers that can sometime exists between generations. Young and old people can feel as though they don't have much in common, that they don't share many lived experiences. In the context of this book, readers learn that that notion isn't always true. There are so many things that can be shared on an intergenerational level. As always, the artwork was astonishing. I expect nothing less from Santat. The contrasting styles between the artwork done by the grandfather and the artwork done by the grandson was AMAZING. There were some panels that made me second guess whether the artwork was being doing by one person. It was absolutely beautiful. Honestly, if you haven't had the chance to pick this one up I highly recommend that you get to it as quickly as possible.
We are more alike than we are different. Language barriers can create chasms if we let them. Thankfully, this grandfather-grandson duo find a common ground in drawing and realize that in the silence they are Drawn Together.
Don’t you love a good double entendres?
There’s much to unpack in this skinny little book with big ideas. This is a wonderful foray into talking to kids about how to bridge the gap between people seemingly so different from them—if only on the surface level. Articles in the news would add a layer of deeper thinking.

This picture book is really great. The illustrator makes the pictures come to life. It shows the generation gaps that can happen and how all it takes is one thing to connect each other. This book can be used as a tool for kids and parents alike especially if there is issues connecting with one another.

I don't know if I've ever read another picture book where I felt the text utterly unneeded. I know this is Minh Le story but I found his narrative intrusive and unnecessary.
Santat showed the complete arc and emotion of the story in his mesmerizing drawings.

A beautifully illustrated (graphic-novel-like) book! Au enjoyed looking at the pictures and reading at 2.
