My 6 year old artist and I loved this book. Sometimes, it’s easier to connect with no words at all. The illustrations are gorgeous...as they should be.
A boy speaks only English and cannot understand his grandfather, who cannot speak English. The two clearly love one another and spend the day together. They overcome their language barrier through their art forms which merge, crash, and collaborate to the delight of the reader. Great book to talk about immigration and families. Also, it just has some really cool illustrations that will inspire kids!
This picture book belongs in everyone's home...it speaks to the relationships that children have with grandparents. Sometimes there are no words, but the bond exists. In this case, it is drawing that connects the boy with his grandfather. The illustrations are gorgeous. Seriously, go out and get this book, like now!
An ode to the power of art and drawing to bridge generation and language differences.
A boy and his grandfather are unable to communicate, but then discovery a joint love of drawing and manage to create their own story.

Beautifully illustrated with a wonderful message about a grandfather and grandson communicating with each other through art.
Heartwarming and heart string pulling like a good Pixar short film. T_T
As a child of immigrants, I thought the premise of the book was really spot-on. Being brought up in an English-speaking country and then the frustration of trying to communicate with elders in a language I couldn't speak.
I thought the words in the second half of the book were way too saccharine and got in the way of the story-telling. A great alternative to the ending might've been if the book took us on the adventure that the young boy went on with his grandfather that day (rather than over-describing the togetherness).
I appreciate a children's story tackling intergenerational communication challenges across multiple languges. The illustrations were pretty cool too (albeit somewhat trope-like).
A solid 2.5 stars

Dan Santat's intricate, almost 3-D illustrations shine in this story of using art to bridge the language barrier between a boy and his Thai grandfather. Have tissues handy.

I also read on Twitter that Dan invented his own font (Danvetica) for the title's lettering, which is based on the shapes of Thai lettering.
