Anne, our main character, was born into an elite family of Luminates, a special class that is able to wield magic due to the power of the Binding. Anne, however, is unable to wield the magic, making her an outcast in her own society. Anne's main gift seems to be her deplorable manners, as well as he strange ability to break spells and cause them to malfunction. After her sister's disastrous party, Anne is sent to Hungary with her Grandmother, to wait out the gossip in England and to better her manners. In Hungary, Anne meets the Romani, who have their own secret method of magic. She tries to learn their way, but she just cannot use magic in any sense, although she can feel it. A group of revolutionaries approach Anne to try and convince her to break the Binding to allow magic to be available to all, instead of just the wealthy bloodlines. She struggles with the decision throughout the book, with her father and cousin encouraging her to break it , while her other cousin and the handsome Romani named Gabor argue against it.

The book starts out a bit slow, but things start to pick up after a bit when Anne starts to understand her powers and what she can do.
