There is the miscommunication trope, which I'm not a fan of but there is a forgiveness here, since she's escaping an abusive ex. But also, is Gelato that hard to make? Still cute though, but the plot holes got me.

“Sometimes, it’s the letting go of things that sets you free.”

Oh, cucchiaino, how sweet this was. This is my second Josie Silver book (I read One Night on the Island and really enjoyed it), and she has such a way of making your heart all twisted up for her characters and the things they’ve been through/are going through. I truly just wanted to hug them and reassure them all will be okay.

Things I loved:

I just could not get into this book. I honestly skimmed through most of it. It was basically two people dealing with grief making gelato and a lot of secrets.

Josie Silver tugs at my heartstrings with “A Winter in New York” and I am here for all of it. If this book was one of those Holiday movies that pop up on Netflix, I would make it into my regular rotation. It has all the hallmarks of a heartfelt, feel good story: love, family, drama and the courage to overcome trauma. I truly loved this book.

The chemistry between Gio and Iris is electric from the first scene. I love the buildup and the fact that, while we the reader KNOW something is coming, it didn’t feel super obvious in the prose. There was buildup in the connection that didn’t have to be verbalized constantly; it just happened naturally on the page until as the reader, I squealed with happiness when all the pieces came together.

The supporting cast is superb. I adored the love and chaos that is the Belotti family, one that’s loud and boisterous and supportive. In the scheme of this story and Iris and Gio’s background, it was perfect. The gelateria was a warm, comforting backdrop for the family and I felt it was the perfect atmosphere for love to develop. I also enjoyed the flashbacks that explained Santo and Vivien’s history, and how it shaped Gio and Iris’s story. Bobby and Robin are the friends that everyone wishes they had…I would take them as best friends any day of the week!

There are things between Gio and Iris that I don’t love, but by the end I understood them more based on their lived experieces and the explanatons given…life is messy and hard, especially when trauma is involved. Both Gio and Iris have to overcome their own internal obstacles, and I felt their struggles and at times, shed a tear with them as they found their way out of them.

For me, a good book is one that I read before I fall asleep and one I want to pick up the second I wake up, and “A Winter in New York” fit that bill. It’s sure there will be some who think it’s a bit cheesy, but that’s what I think made me love it so. If you want something that will leave you with that warm and fuzzy feeling, this book is for you.

** A big thank you to NetGalley and Random House-Ballantine for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this one and appreciate the opportunity!!**
