I really enjoyed this book! It bounces back and forth between a woman in her late 30s who just recently got married but is feeling less than certain about the decision, and her Irish grandmother who married someone not of her choosing. The book really explores the age-old question of "what truly makes a good marriage", and how love in a marriage is different than that of lust and young-love. I know everyone has different opinions on what makes a marriage work, what love really means, etc, but I consider myself quite a practical and realistic person, so this book really spoke to me. There are also old Irish recipes sprinkled throughout the book which I quite enjoyed! An honest look at love, relationships, marriage and our own expectations for the same.

i love this book, fall for both James Nolan the Grandfather and Dan Kerrigan the Husband. They're both gentlemen.
so i'm happy for the last statement Tressa gave:

I first read Recipes for a Perfect Marriage (now published as "A Perfect Marriage" for anyone looking for it on Amazon) when I was wading my way through an abusive marriage.

After 15 years, I hunted down the eBook version (now published under a slightly different name) and bought it again, because I had remembered it being this surprising, standout masterpiece that rocked my world despite seeming so humble and unassuming to begin with.

Somehow, it was even better than I remembered.

One of the things I think that's incredibly telling about the writing is that while Bernadine and Tressa both have the capacity to be extremely unlikable, they're not. They're both very human and both make fairly large mistakes. And even though the way *I* remembered my previous reading, was being more irritated by Bernadine, it was Tressa who infuriated me to the point of literally scowling and scoffing at her repeatedly. I honestly can't even imagine why younger me didn't want to box her upside the head - more than once.

But despite both women's mistakes, they're deeply relatable characters whose stories are very easy to resonate with for many people, I think.

I love this book, and it was such a nice revisit. I love it.

It took a while to engage with this book but after the first few chapters I was totally hooked. Very enjoyable.

Irlantilaiset ruuanlaittoon liittyvät ohjeet sopivat hyvin muun pohdinnan oheen.
