I love Wein's historical fiction so much. In Stateless she returns to female pilots but shifts to a slightly different time period - between the wars. The intrigue, the characters, the plot. I loved it all. I really appreciated the way she showed that there were good people caught up in the wrong place who did make difficult decisions to do the right thing. I always appreciate her nuanced exploration of human character. Another amazing novel.

Trigger warnings: murder, gun violence, death, threat of war, racism, antisemitism.

I LOVE the way that Elizabeth Wein weaves incredible stories around her love of historic planes, and Code Name Verity is, always and forever, one of my favourite young adult books. So when I saw that this was a combination of badass female pilot and the interwar period and a MURDER MYSTERY, I was freaking SOLD.

This was, to be honest, a tad slow at times, but I loved the competition aspect of the story, the way it dealt with refugees caught without a country, and the way many of the characters discover similarities between themselves over the course of the story. So yeah, it's definitely not my favourite of Wein's books. But it was a solidly good time, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

If you like airplanes and want to follow a group of young people as they fly around Europe and solve a murder mystery that has international consequences, then this is the book for you. It is 1937, and Stella North is chosen to represent Britain in the Europe’s first air race for young people. The race is supposed to showcase camaraderie in a time of political turmoil but results in murder instead. This is a fast-paced book that I enjoyed reading. Stella and her competitors were fun to get to know; although, a couple of them have rather sad backstories. This book provides an interesting glimpse into a politically charged time.

Elizabeth Wein really knows her stuff, and her passion for all things aviation and history really shines through in her writing, but I just really couldn't get into this one.

Not as amazing as her book Verity, but that’s a 5-star for me so a high bar. The sexism was infuriating but that’s kind of the point. I warmed to the characters as the book went.
