A book that could've been more interesting has been lost in translation to say the least, having read four other Shafak books I am disappointed with this one as it does not flow smoothly as the books by her generally do. Quite draggy at times and doesn't always make sense.

that little twist elevated this book tbh but yeah it was a bit hard for me to get through this one (& The Gaze) that I wonder if it's because it's originally written in Turkish and then translated to English... honestly just wish it was shorter than it was

Since this is usually not my kind of book, it was interesting and had me eager to know what was next. Yet, it took me too long to finally finish this and I think that lessened the quality of my reading experience. It was a good book but it's either a hit or miss!

I'm not sure how I feel about Elif Shafak's Bit Palas. In one way it felt like there was a lot of social commentary that went over my head. Seems I don't know enough about Turkish culture.
The stories felt very scattered and arbitrary, with only the house and a handful loose motifs as a common denominators. The self-inflicted pain (mostly emotional, sometimes physical) of the palace's inhabitants never kept them from agonizing over soap operas or gossiping about others who are actually just like them. One aspect I didn't quite get is the whole waste problem that turns more and more into a vermin situation. As a whole I can say that the book was entertaining, all too cute in places, and contained some suspicious weird bits (actually no pun intended).
