My rating for this is very simple, I hate Bowen but loved Mariketa.
Let's start with my love. She was so strong in power and mind. She's mortal through the entire book and has to learn to control her powers and accept her destiny. She easily has the best arc out of the books that I've read so far in this series. And, contrary to how I felt about other endings, I was happy she got everything she wanted in the end.
Now Bowen. I hate him. He always degraded her and belittled her. Now I can get down with that at the beginning, but this man was literally doing it with only 10% of the book left. I lost count of the number of times he said that he needed to change for her as much as she is changing for him, and then didn't. It literally wasn't until he almost saw her die that he accepted who she was.

I was certaintly looking forward to this one as Bowen had caught my attention since the first novel. I liked the heroine in this one better than I did the one in the previous novel. There wasn't much I didn't like outside of Bowen's actions that deemed him a jackass in the beginning of the book and sometimes Bowen was a little too.... Alpha male but I didn't fret too much over that as Mariketa certaintly put him in his place and responded accordingly. This book was really good and I almost enjoyed it as much as the first one (my favorite in this series, so far) but that's almost. Not entirely. And I would totally recommend it.

This was definitely my favorite of the series so far. Bowen and Mari's flirting had me grinning ear to ear on multiple occasions. I thought Mari's struggle with always feeling like the b-team was really relatable. It was also nice to see that even someone as powerful as Mari could feel that sort of insecurity. At the end she decided to pursue her own power and fate regardless of what happened with Rowan which was great to see.

Bowen was a fuck up. Like a massive fuck up. He was adorable and charming, but jesus... calling someone by the wrong name during your mating ritual? Mari is a bigger woman than I for forgiving him so quickly (or at all, frankly). Towards the end when he had the realization that he had been really selfish and judgmental of Mari begin a witch, and I really appreciated that he looked to Lachlain as an example of how to accept Mari.

I was honestly a little worried that the mating scene would be a repeat of Lachlain and Emmaline, but what I am dubbing the marionette scene turned out to be AMAZING. I love that even in that situation Mari still held the power.
