Just so much in this novel. I cried. I love how Jim Butcher has such insight to the human condition and soul sprinkled liberally through out battle and snarky pop culture references.
This is my first time to be without another Dresden File book to turn to and I feel the absence keenly. Like a good friend moving away to another country with no idea when they will return.

Yeah, it took me FOREVER to get through this. Why? Because it was non-stop action with barely a moment to breathe in between huge battles. Which... is the title, I suppose. But still, this one was a rough read. Still good, but I needed to take long breaks between chapters. Oy...

This picks up where Peace Talks left off in an epic battle for Chicago. So many things change in this book. Friends die. Others turn their backs on Harry. Powers reveal themselves as new threats. His life will never be the same. Still, Harry must be true to Harry and to those he loves regardless of the consequences. The stakes continue to increase as do the sacrifices that must be made. Even as things are resolved, the groundwork is laid for more conflict in the neverending trouble that is Harry Dresden's life. This book is almost entirely one long battle for Chicago. If you like action, this book doesn't disappoint
Let me explain the 2; it was Butcher's usual brilliant stuff, I just didn't love it. You know when a book is just way too hectic, even though the story is good? Understand, conceptually, that was the idea, but still. Way too hectic. Good, just not great.

Quite a bit better than Peace Talks. Solid 4/5 stars. Some pretty great moments overall, and the short story at the end really ties it off. Great idea to include it. Though I am left wondering why a bunch of toddlers were left in a preschool at 3am. *glares at Butcher and editors*
Though I enjoy The Dresden books I found this one was yet another nonstop action slog with little story progression. The one main character death felt hollow and under-realized compared to the person’s importance. Perhaps I should give up on expecting more from the series but I keep coming back for more expecting something new but getting more of the same.
