This book was a journey to say the least! I thoroughly enjoy multiple perspectives and the time spent with each main character was necessary and helped build out the story very well. Nothing felt unnecessary or like filler! I’m highly upset but excited about the semi-cliffhanger ending but it leads to so many possibilities for the story and characters.

I enjoyed most parts of this book, an engaging novel with phenomenal writing. What stood out the most was how Àkerström was able to write different compelling and messy characters, each with their own voice. Kemi, Brittany and Muna all have their own share of troubles and their story interlink in Sweeden through Jonny.

The second half of the book fell off, the pacing was off and the story just failed to move to second gear. I ended up getting bored with the repetitive storyline of Kemi, who was a favourite at the beginning, but her life kept revolving around trying to prove her worth at work, lacking self confidence by throwing her body to racist married man and teenagers [I found this whole thing hard to believe especially with how the character was portrayed at the beginning], and the ending just made all this build up redundant. I kept questioning every discussion Brittany was making from start to end.

Another issue that bothered me was how these beautiful and powerful women were portrayed as being insecure while succumbing to racism and fetishism, that was a bit uncomfortable.

I listened to this on audio from the library and at first i was kind of like, where is this story going? what's the point of the plot? And then it kind of tied together about 75% of the way in. I wasn't sure at first but ended up really liking it. I thought it was messy and dangerous and sad. I was angry for all the characters. Some commenters said the accents were terrible in the audio, but I'm not overly familiar with any of the main ones so i didn't really notice them.

I didn't realize there was a second book that picks up the characters so I'm curious to see what happens with them.

At first I kind of thought Muna's story seemed out of place with Kemi and Brittany but then I thought about it some more and kind of realized that was the point? Especially when we consider the title. This book tackles a lot of different areas and concepts and I really enjoyed it.
