This book has beauty woven throughout its pages and yet consequently there is so much pain begging to be released. A lot of the behaviors from the characters made my skin crawl, with such reckless, juvenile and naive approaches I was actually yelling cmon that doesn’t make much sense. However that’s a part of the book that made the story so compelling, you’re simply rooting for all three women to have successful lives but are reminded just how human they are at the same time. Then the author includes another powerful layer exploring undiagnosed conditions (not necessarily sure if it’s explored in the best way possible but it WORKS) which brought chills to my spine, the way the character is developed does have an eerie undertone which is hard to process but draws you in more to know them as a whole person. A final note this book echoed throughout “support” can get you so far, LEAN on the community you have. The ending of this was exactly what I hadn’t hoped for *filled with soo much sorrow* honestly left me a bit in disbelief.
Wow. This book was so beautifully written. I was mesmerized by Brittany, Muna and Kemi. Their stories were completely engrossing. But this book was extremely depressing and definitely check out the content warnings for this one.
Well told story about three distinct women who discover how they are perceived by a super white world in which all three are foreigners with extremely different circumstances. Sweden comes out of this looking grey and scathingly passive aggressive and cruel. It is also clear that it's as racist as any predominantly white country.
The nuance of each situation was told well, its just a rather tragic story overall. Super sad situation and terrifying in at least one case. But it had my attention the whole time with great writing and never a really dull moment. Just be prepared for a sort of non-ending that leaves the three main characters at points in their lives where resolution is possibly impossible.

Such a great ending!
I had a hard time maintaining my interest throughout this book - something about the writing didn’t connect me with the characters. I did appreciate learning about each of the women’s challenges of immigrating to Sweden - giving me perspective on the isolation of being Black in a foreign (white) country. This was a bit of a depressing read, though, and that’s not really what I felt like. I might have enjoyed this more as an audiobook, or perhaps if I were in a different mood.
I absolutely loved this book. Any book that makes me feel some type of way (whether good, bad or indifferent) is good with me. All three main characters brought something different out of this book. I appreciate the author for allowing these women to just ‘be’, in all of their mess, trials, and triumphs, they were just able to be.
Highly recommend!
